Nis, a city in Serbia, is becoming a more well-liked travel destination. You’ll enjoy a beautiful drive to this charming, laid-back city that dates back to Roman times on this all-day excursion from Sofia.
Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, was born in Nis. One of Serbia’s oldest churches, dating to the fourth century, is found in the Medijana district.
A retail street, some fortification ruins, and gorgeous gardens are all there. The route passes through a river canyon on the approach to Nis, which is particularly picturesque.
You should visit the renowned Cele Kula as your first stop (Skull Tower). Explore the unique memorial honoring the sacrifice of Serbian revolutionaries while learning about the crimes carried out by the Turks.
The next significant location is a Roman estate archeological site in Medijana’s suburbs, which is currently closed to dining. View the ruins of a granary, a villa, a villa, and a bath. The museum displays artifacts discovered at the site, including utensils for daily use, sculptures, and depictions of Roman gods and goddesses.
Visit Roman-era excavations at the Nis Fortress, learn about 6000-year-old finds from the Nis area in the town’s archaeological hall, and explore more recent discoveries in the Royal Villa of Konstantine the Great in Mediana (currently closed for restorations ).
You can choose to taste the famous Serbian grill at a traditional restaurant where you can pay with a card (there are lots of vegetarian and vegan options available) or Serbian street cuisine if you have some spare time to explore the central square.
Your driver will take you to a small concentration camp built by the Germans to house and eventually exterminate Jews, Romas, and other minorities after lunch.
You’ll set off on your return trip to Sofia around 16:00, and you should be there around 18:30.
